Review count, not stars
Picked contractors cited a median of 700 reviews, rejected ones 238. The median rating was 4.9 for both.
What AI says a new AC costs
Across 70 answers that quoted a price, the median range was $6,000 to $12,000. Meta Muse quoted $4,400 to $9,000, Grok Bot $6,500 to $12,000.
They rarely agree
When all three answered the same question, they picked a common contractor 17% of the time (35 questions).
BBB, not Google
Grok Bot cited bbb.org in 89% of its answers. A Google Maps or Business Profile page was cited in under 1% of answers.
A price gets quoted
23% of the reasons given for a pick quoted a specific price or fee from the contractor.
What to fix
Six changes, in the order the data ranks them

Put the town on the page
The assistant passed on contractors whose address or pages placed them in the next town over. Give every town you serve a page that says so, and keep your address consistent everywhere.

Make the facts findable on your own site
When the assistant could not find your license, hours, fees or warranty, it moved on. Put them in plain text on pages it will open.
- 03
Show your license number
Grok Bot looked for a license it could verify. Print the number on your site and keep it current with the state.
- 04
Publish a price
Instinct passed on contractors with no published price in nearly half its rejections. A diagnostic fee and installed price ranges are enough.
- 05
Say when you can come
Same-day and this-week questions went to contractors who stated a window, a cutoff time or weekend hours.
- 06
Keep the review count growing
Ratings were a tie. What separated picks from rejects was how many reviews backed them.
Method
How we did it
Every September 2026 Picks Index answer about HVAC from Grok Bot, Meta Muse and Instinct. Each assistant named the contractors it picked and the ones it considered and passed on, with a reason. The reasons for passing were coded into categories by a model reading the assistant's own words; one rejection can carry several reasons.
Numbers are frozen as of 2026-09-29. Every underlying answer is public in the Picks Index, why the assistants pick is on how AI assistants choose an HVAC company, and these figures are available as data.
