# How to get your business recommended by Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini

> Google's AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini build local answers from Google Search, Maps and your Business Profile. Complete the profile and publish the facts.

Google's AI answers sit on top of Google Search and Google Maps, so they read the same things Google already knows about you. Your Business Profile, your reviews and your indexed website pages. Google says there is no special optimization needed, so the work is making your profile complete, your site clear and both of them agree.

- **23%** of US consumers have used Google AI Mode to find a local business recommendation. (BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, Feb 2026)
- **54%** of AI citations for plumbing questions went to Google. Angi got 2.2% and HomeAdvisor 0.9%. (BrightLocal, 1.9M citations across 1,355 locations, Aug 2026)
- **300M+** places that Gemini in Google Maps analyzes, along with reviews from more than 500 million contributors. (Google, Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation, March 12, 2026)

## Where Google's AI gets local business information

Google has several AI surfaces, and they share one source of truth. AI Overviews appear at the top of regular results. AI Mode is the conversational tab in Search. Ask Maps, launched in March 2026 in the US and India, lets people ask Google Maps questions in plain language. The Gemini app looks up places through Google Maps and can show ratings, hours, websites and review summaries.

Google's own guidance says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same Search systems as regular results. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be used as a supporting link. Google also says these features may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources for one question, which it calls query fan-out. Its one local specific instruction is to keep your Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.

AI Mode can now go further for some local jobs. Google's help center says it can check availability and pricing for appointments and home services such as electricians. It gathers what is listed on the web, and if a business does not list the answer, Google may call the business to ask.

## What Google's AI appears to weigh

Google says local results come down to relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the request. Prominence comes from how well known you are, including links from other sites and your review count and rating. The AI answers sit on top of those same systems.

On top of that, the AI reads detail. It can match a customer's exact need, like a lit tennis court open tonight or a plumber who replaces tankless heaters, against your services, attributes, review text and website. A complete profile with specific services gives it something to match. A bare one gives it a category and a phone number.

> Google says there is no special trick for its AI answers. The profile, the reviews and the site still decide it.

## The checklist

1. **Verify and complete your Business Profile** At business.google.com, verify the profile, pick the most specific primary category, add secondary categories, and fill in hours, holiday hours, service areas and attributes. Google says complete and accurate profiles are more likely to show in local results.
2. **List every service with a description and price** In the profile's services section, add each job you want to be found for, in your customers' words, with a price or starting price where you can. This is what lets the AI match a specific request to you.
3. **Add a booking or quote link** Put your booking, appointment or quote link on the profile and make sure it works on a phone. Google's AI is moving toward booking and checking availability for the customer.
4. **Get reviews that describe the job** Ask customers to say what you did and where, like a same day water heater swap in Plano. Reply to every review. Google counts reviews toward prominence, and the AI reads the text.
5. **Make your site indexable with snippets** In Google Search Console, inspect your key service pages and confirm they are indexed. Remove any nosnippet tags on pages you want cited. Google says a page must be eligible for a snippet to be a supporting link.
6. **Publish the same facts on your site** Service pages that name the towns you cover, your prices or how you quote, your hours and your licenses. If you use LocalBusiness structured data, keep it matched to the visible text. Google says no special schema is required.
7. **Decide how you handle Google's automated calls** In your profile go to More, Business Profile settings, Advanced settings, then Google automated calls and text messages. Leave bookings and inquiries on if you want Google to check price and availability for customers, and answer those calls. Publishing prices online means fewer calls.
8. **Be mentioned beyond your profile** AI Overviews also cite local news, trade directories and community sites. Fix your listings there and look for real mentions, like a local best of list or a supplier's installer directory.

## How to check whether Google's AI recommends you today

Test each surface, because they do not always agree. Use regular Google Search for AI Overviews, the AI Mode tab, Ask Maps in the Google Maps app where it is available, and the Gemini app. Use a private window or a signed out session when you can, since Maps personalizes results from what you have searched and saved.

Ask what a customer would ask, with a place in it. Try "Best roofer in Frisco for hail damage", then "Who can fix a leaking water heater today in 85016 and what does it usually cost?", then "Which dentists near Midtown Atlanta do same day crowns?" Then ask about yourself directly, with "What do people say about [your business]?"

Note whether you were named, what reason was given, and which links were cited. Then open your Business Profile and check whether the facts Google repeated are the ones you wrote. Repeat the questions on a different day, since AI answers vary.

Our free pick report does this at scale. It runs real customer questions through AI assistants and shows who gets picked and why, so you can see what to fix without testing by hand.

## Questions

### How do I get my business in Google AI Overviews?

Be indexed and eligible for a snippet, then make your pages and profile answer the questions customers ask. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews. Standard SEO, a complete Business Profile and clear, factual service pages are the work.

### Does Google AI Mode use my Google Business Profile?

Yes, in the sense that AI Mode sits on Google Search and Maps, which use your Business Profile for local results. Google's guidance for AI features tells business owners to keep their Business Profile information current.

### Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for Google's AI?

No. Google says you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or special schema to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data still helps if it matches what is visible on the page.

### What is Ask Maps?

A Gemini powered feature in Google Maps, launched March 12, 2026 in the US and India. People ask questions in plain language and get suggestions on a map. Google says it draws on more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors.

### Should I let Google's AI call my business?

If you want to be considered when a customer asks AI Mode to check prices and availability, yes. Google says it may call when a business does not list the answer online. You control this in Business Profile under Advanced settings, and you must be verified to change it.

### Do reviews matter for Google's AI answers?

Yes. Google counts review count and rating toward prominence in local results, and Gemini can summarize review themes for a place. Reviews that describe the job and the town give the AI more to match against a specific request.
