# How to get your business recommended by Microsoft Copilot

> Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing. Claim Bing Places, verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, and publish clear facts so Copilot can find and cite you.

Microsoft Copilot looks things up with Bing and cites the pages it uses. So getting recommended by Copilot starts with Bing. Claim your Bing Places listing, make sure Bing can crawl and index your site, and publish the facts customers ask about. Bing Webmaster Tools will even show you when Copilot cites your pages.

- **17%** of US adults have used Copilot, third behind ChatGPT (44%) and Gemini (24%). (Pew Research Center, Americans and AI 2026, June 2026, n=5,119)
- **~3x** growth in daily users of Microsoft's consumer Copilot products year over year, per Satya Nadella. (Microsoft FY26 Q2 earnings call, via TechCrunch, Jan 29, 2026)
- **45%** of US consumers used ChatGPT or another AI tool for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. (BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, Feb 2026)

## Where Copilot gets local business information

Microsoft's documentation for Copilot at work says that when Copilot needs current information it turns the question into a short search query, sends it to the Bing search service, and writes the answer from what comes back. The transparency note for the consumer Copilot says its web answers are grounded in search results and center on high ranking web content, with linked citations under the text. Microsoft runs Bing, and Copilot Search lives inside it.

For local businesses, Bing's own source is Bing Places for Business. Microsoft describes it as a free platform where businesses manage listings that appear in Bing search results and Bing Maps. When it relaunched Bing Places in October 2025, Microsoft said it was investing in deeper integrations with Bing Maps and Copilot. Copilot answers in Bing have shown a map with local listings beside the AI answer, each with name, address, phone, website and directions.

Microsoft has not published exactly how Copilot chooses among local businesses. What is clear is the path. Copilot asks Bing, and Bing knows your business from Bing Places, your website and the other pages it has indexed about you.

## What Copilot appears to weigh

Because Copilot grounds its answers in high ranking Bing results, the basics of Bing visibility carry over. Your site has to be crawlable and indexed by Bing. Your Bing Places listing has to be claimed, correct and complete. And the facts on both have to match what customers ask about.

Many owners never touch Bing because Google sends most of their search traffic. That leaves Bing Places listings unclaimed or out of date, often with an old phone number or hours from years ago. For Copilot, that stale listing may be the version of your business it reads.

> Copilot asks Bing. If you have never opened Bing Places, Copilot may be reading a listing you did not write.

## The checklist

1. **Claim your Bing Places listing** Go to bing.com/forbusiness, sign in with a Microsoft account, and search for your business. Claim it, or import your listings from Google Business Profile, which Microsoft rebuilt to keep names, hours and contact details intact. Then verify.
2. **Fill in every field that matters** Categories, hours, phone, website, service area, photos and social links. Microsoft recommends adding a website link, hours, photos and social profiles, and a menu or ordering link for restaurants. Add your booking or quote link where it fits.
3. **Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools** At bing.com/webmasters, add and verify your site. You can import it from Google Search Console. Submit your sitemap and check that your service pages are indexed.
4. **Let Bingbot crawl your pages** Check robots.txt and your host or CDN bot settings so Bingbot is not blocked. A page Bing cannot crawl cannot be the page Copilot cites.
5. **Tell Bing when pages change** Use IndexNow, which Bing supports and many site builders and SEO plugins offer as a setting, so a new price or service page is picked up quickly instead of waiting for the next crawl.
6. **Publish the deciding facts as text** One page per main service, with the towns you serve, a price or how you quote, hours, emergency or same day availability, and licenses. Keep it identical to your Bing Places and Google listings.
7. **Watch the AI Performance report** In Bing Webmaster Tools, the AI Performance report (public preview since February 2026) shows how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages, which pages, and the grounding queries behind them.

## How to check whether Copilot recommends you today

Open Copilot at copilot.microsoft.com or in the Copilot app, and also try Copilot Search in Bing. Ask what a customer would ask, with a place in it.

Try "Who is the best electrician in Columbus, Ohio for a panel upgrade?", then "I need a pest control company in 30307 this week, who should I call?", then "Compare [your business] and [a competitor]." Then search your own business name on Bing and look at the listing it shows.

Look at whether you were named, the reason given, and the citations under the answer. Copilot links its sources, so you can see which pages it relied on. If the listing on Bing is wrong, that is your first fix. Ask again on another day, since answers change.

## Questions

### How do I get my business on Microsoft Copilot?

Claim and complete your Bing Places listing at bing.com/forbusiness, verify your website in Bing Webmaster Tools, and publish your services, area, prices and hours as text on your site. Copilot uses Bing to look things up, so Bing has to know your business first.

### Does Copilot use Bing Places?

Microsoft has not published exactly how Copilot picks local businesses. It does say Copilot grounds web answers in the Bing search service, and Bing Places is how businesses manage their listing in Bing search and Bing Maps. Microsoft has also said it is building deeper Bing Places integration with Copilot.

### Does Copilot use my Google Business Profile?

Not directly. Copilot looks things up with Bing, not Google. You can import your Google Business Profile into Bing Places, which is the fastest way to get the same facts in front of Copilot.

### Is Bing Places free?

Yes. Microsoft describes Bing Places for Business as a free platform for creating and managing your listing in Bing search and Bing Maps.

### How can I tell if Copilot cites my website?

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open the AI Performance report. It shows citation counts for Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, which pages were cited, and the grounding queries used. Microsoft notes it is a sample, not a full log.

### Is Copilot the same as Bing?

No, but they are linked. Copilot is Microsoft's assistant, and it sends search queries to Bing when it needs current information. Copilot Search in Bing blends regular results with AI answers and cites its sources.
